Hall Alminana prepares planning regulations and form-based zoning codes, including the unified land development ordinance called the SmartCode, to reflect the conditions and aspirations of individual communities.
The SmartCode, developed by Duany Plater-Zyberk, is a model unified development ordinance that incorporates Smart Growth and New Urbanism principles. Hall Alminana customizes it to regional character with the participation of local citizens. The founders of Hall Alminana are contributing editors of the SmartCode and Manual.
The SmartCode was released nationally in 2003 and has already been implemented in many jurisdictions. The principals of Hall Alminana were part of the Fisher & Hall Urban Design team that calibrated the 2003 Central Petaluma SmartCode, which was the first adopted SmartCode in the U.S., and the Gulfport SmartCode, which received the inaugural Driehaus Form-Based Codes Award from the Form-Based Code Institute in 2007.
