This Vision Plan was designed by a team led by Fisher & Hall Urban Design, with Laura Hall as Project Director and Community Facilitator. Robert Alminana was Project Architect as part of Sargent Town Planning. San Quentin State Prison, originally built in 1852, is located along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay in Marin County. With striking views of the Bay Area, it is strategically located for future rail and ferry service. Many of the structures on site are historically significant but because of their age, maintenance is very costly. If the State of California were to close the prison, the property would come under Marin County’s jurisdiction, so the County has been proactive in putting visionary poliicies and plans in place if and when that occurs. Incorporating the community’s interest, the Vision Plan envisions this world-class site as a place where site and building design would also be world class. It includes compact, mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods and centers, world class cultural amentiies, affordable housing, historic preservation and a new ferry terminal that would link it to San Francisco.
